Our Role as Courageous Advocates for Health and Physical Education

This is my last full month as president of SHAPE America. As I reflect on where we’ve been and where we are going, I am determined to remind everyone about the critical work that must be done in every school, every day.

That work begins and ends with each of us. When we choose — every day — to go above and beyond on behalf of the students in our care, we can change lives forever.

How Do We Engage Stakeholders in Our Work?

This week, 150 health and physical educators from 38 states will converge on Capitol Hill as part of SHAPE America’s SPEAK Out! Day. They’ll share personal stories of success with members of Congress and advocate for #MoreTitleIV funding.

Even if you were not able to join us at SPEAK Out! Day, you can still take action by sending a note to your legislators right now (well, after you read the rest of my blog post). It only takes a minute … literally.

Later this month, I am traveling to Chicago for the annual ASCD Conference because I want to tell a room full of administrators that physical education makes the difference in their schools. If we can change their hearts, we might change their minds.

It is a busy month, but I’m tireless and passionate about HPE — and I need you with me. Don’t tell me you don’t have the time. I am finding the time because I know that changing the world is about our beliefs.

So, after you write your legislators, schedule a meeting with your principal. Don’t just blow them off because you’re convinced they don’t care. Look through the variety of advocacy resources on SHAPE America’s website to guide your conversation.

It’s All Worth It

I hope you’ll continue to give of yourself and use your talents to make life better for your students because that’s what it’s all about. That is what we are here for. It’s our mission and our work.

We are in this fine profession together so we can serve children, be their voice, and help them live their best life.

I look forward to seeing you all in Tampa for SHAPE America’s National Convention & Expo, where we’ll also be celebrating the launch of SHAPE America’s new service-learning program: health. moves. minds.™

The future is here my friends, and you’re gonna love it!
